Denise Stephanie Hewitt
Denise Stephanie Hewitt is a Brooklyn-born photographer and Gordon Parks Foundation Scholar. Beginning her career with a Marie Claire Magazine Cover during her apprenticeship at Red Hook Labs Photography Studio, Hewitt’s practice merges fashion, editorial, and documentary styles that center black and brown leaders, heritage, and beauty. Her portraits have graced Essence Magazine, Cultured Magazine, the Converse Soho Flagship, Headline Gallery, the Apollo Theatre, Photoville, the streets of New York and Times Square. This year alone, Hewitt photographed Converse and Theory’s Black History Month Campaigns, as well as Serena Williams at the launch of her new brand Wyn Beauty.
During her time as a student at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, she lived a Hannah Montana double life running between classes and photoshoots for Vogue.com. As a returning contributor, she has photographed the Met Gala preparations of Sha'Carri Richardson and Simone Biles, Ruth Negga getting ready for the Tony Awards, The Layout, and Afropunk. Denise also spends her time as a creative strategist and storyteller, having worked at brands like Roc Nation, Hypebeast, Tia Adeola, and more. Her leadership across academia and creative fields landed her in Essence Magazine's inaugural list of Top 10 Creators Under 30 working to deepen the impact of Black cultural production. Hewitt’s goal is to build an archive of black life, artistry, and autonomy through visual art. With the intimacies of her Caribbean heritage as a guiding force, each project is personal and approached with intricate detail.
